Stanislav Shushkevich was a Belarusian politician and scientist born on December 15, 1934, in Minsk. He served as the first President of independent Belarus from August 25, 1991, to January 26, 1994, following the country's separation from the Soviet Union. Shushkevich was the Chairman of the Supreme Soviet and supported democratic socialist reforms. He played a significant role in the establishment of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Additionally, he was a member of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, holding a Ph.D. in physics and mathematics, and authored numerous scholarly articles and books.
