Stanley E. Whitcomb is an American physicist known for his significant contributions to gravitational wave research as a lead scientist at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO). He was born on January 23, 1951, in Denver, and earned his physics degree from Caltech in 1973. After a year at the University of Cambridge, he completed his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago in 1980. After returning to LIGO in 1991, he played a key role in the project that confirmed the existence of gravitational waves in 2016, sharing the Henry Draper Medal in 2017.
