He founded Cross-Cultural Communications in 1971, producing over 500 titles in 59 languages by various prominent authors including Pablo Neruda and Allen Ginsberg. Barkan taught English for nearly 30 years in New York City before retiring in 1991, receiving the New York City Poetry Teacher of the Year Award that year. His poetry has been translated into 32 languages and appears in numerous collections, showcasing his impact on literature and cultural communication.
