Stanley Osher is an American mathematician born on April 24, 1942, known for his extensive contributions in shock capturing, level set methods, and PDE-based approaches in computer vision and image processing. He is a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, and serves as the director of special projects at the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics. He is also a member of the California Institute for NanoSystems at UCLA. In 2014, Osher received the Carl Friedrich Gauss Prize for his influential contributions to applied mathematics.
