He habilitated in 1993 and earned a Dr.-Ing. in electrical and information engineering in 1997. Schäffler worked at SIEMENS AG, served as a professor at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, and has been a full professor of mathematics and operations research since 2000, focusing on stochastic analysis, information theory, and global optimization.
