He earned his doctorate in 1972 and became a professor at the Munich University of Applied Sciences in 1978, where he is now emeritus. His primary research area is magnetic resonance in liquid metals, and he is also involved in vacuum and thin-film technology. Sotier is a member of the Ecological-Democratic Party and has run for the Munich city council. He is married and has four adult children.
