He holds the position of Imperial Chancellor of the Imperial Ethiopian Order of Saint Mary of Zion and is the son of Ras Mengesha Seyoum and Princess Aida Desta. He is a descendant of notable Ethiopian emperors, including Yohannes IV and Haile Selassie. An alumnus of the University of Toronto, he works as an International Business Consultant and directs the Canadian Royal Heritage Trust. His son, Araya Mengesha, is an actor.
