Stein Hjalti í Jákupsstovu is a Faroese marine biologist, born on November 24, 1942. He graduated in marine biology from the University of Bergen in 1971, with a specialization in zooplankton. He worked at the Institute of Marine Research in Bergen (1970-1977) and later at the Fisheries Research Institution in Tórshavn until 1988. He played a key role in developing the Faroese public aquaculture research company, Fiskaaling. He received the 2009 award for public sector leadership in the Faroe Islands and has a son who has served as a university rector.
