He graduated from Metropolitanskolen in 1942 and later studied medicine for six years before switching to psychology, obtaining his degree from the University of Copenhagen in 1953. Hegeler was a pioneer in sexual education for preschoolers, with his groundbreaking book 'Hvordan, mor?' published in 1948. He ran his own psychology practice and co-edited popular sex advice columns with his wife, Inge, while also serving as editor for the consumer magazine 'Tænk.' He passed away on August 15, 2021.
