Stephanie L. Kwolek was an American chemist born in 1923 in New Kensington. She is best known for inventing Kevlar, a strong synthetic fiber, during her more than 40-year career at DuPont. Kwolek, who had Polish ancestry, discovered the first family of synthetic fibers with exceptional strength and rigidity. She received the Lavoisier Medal for outstanding technical achievement from DuPont, making her the only employee to receive this honor until February 2015. In 1995, she became the fourth woman inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame and received numerous awards for her work.
