Stephanus Jacobus van Royen was a Dutch politician born on April 15, 1909, in Hoogezand. He served as a volunteer before becoming a second clerk in Eelde in 1935. In 1941, he became the mayor of Sleen but was dismissed in 1943. Following the liberation, he returned as mayor and briefly served as acting mayor of Zweeloo in 1946. He faced a suspension in late 1959 due to financial issues, leading to his dismissal in 1960. Van Royen passed away suddenly on March 30, 1972, at the age of 62. A school and a street were named in his honor.
