Stephen Joel Albert (1941–1992) was an acclaimed American composer born in New York City. He began musical training in piano, French horn, and trumpet, studying composition at a young age. Albert won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1985 for his Symphony No. 1 'RiverRun' and received a posthumous Grammy Award in 1995 for his Cello Concerto performed by Yo-Yo Ma. He taught notable students like Daniel Asia and was known for works inspired by James Joyce. He tragically died in a car accident in 1992.
