Stephen Michael Alvin Banister was a Welsh first-class cricketer, codebreaker, and civil servant. Born in October 1918 in Llandygai, he spent early years in British India. He studied classics at King's College, Cambridge, playing first-class cricket for the university. During WWII, he worked as a codebreaker at Bletchley Park. After the war, he joined the Civil Service and became under-secretary for the Department for Transport. In retirement, he was involved with Transport Reviews and other organizations. He lived in Effingham, Surrey, with his wife, passed away in June 2006.
