He was the son of David Kates, a long-time member of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, and studied under notable teachers including Marie Roema-Rozanoff and Leonard Rose. Kates gained acclaim after winning the second prize at the 1966 Tchaikovsky International Competition and was the first American to perform Dmitri Shostakovich's First Cello Concerto in the USA. He taught at Peabody Conservatory and had significant influence from renowned musicians like Mstislav Rostropovich.
