Stephen Maxym was an American bassoonist born on July 17, 1915, in New York. He studied at the Institute of Musical Arts (now The Juilliard School) and became the principal bassoonist of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under Fritz Reiner. After serving in the United States Merchant Marine during World War II, he auditioned for Erich Leinsdorf and became the principal bassoonist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. He also had a distinguished teaching career at several prestigious music institutions and co-edited a method for playing the bassoon based on his teachings.
