Stere Popescu was a Romanian ballet dancer and avant-garde choreographer, born on April 17, 1920, in Galați. He studied ballet under Floria Capsali while also pursuing architecture. During the 1940s, he served as a principal dancer at the Bucharest Opera and published studies on dance theory in journals like Contemporanul and Luceafărul. In November 1965, he defected to France after participating in Pierre Boulez's performance at a dance festival. He tragically took his own life in London in March 1968.
