He gained significant media attention starting in mid-2002 as a suspect in the 2001 anthrax attacks. Hatfill faced extensive surveillance and was subjected to multiple FBI raids. He was formally exonerated by the government and received settlement payments for defamation. In 2010, he became an independent researcher and assistant professor. He later served as a coronavirus advisor to President Trump and advocated for hydroxychloroquine despite FDA objections.
