Stewart E. Miller (1918-1990) was a significant American pioneer in microwave and optical communications. He graduated from MIT and worked at Bell Labs, contributing to microwave radar and coaxial cable systems. In the 1960s, he recognized the potential of optical communications, leading research on lens systems and optical fiber, and proposed integrating optical components on semiconductor chips. Miller held around 80 patents and received numerous awards, including the 1989 John Tyndall Award. He was a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a Life Fellow of the IEEE.
