Elling became Sales Director at Star Tour in 1986 and was known for his media engagement during crises like the 2004 Indian tsunami. He entered local politics in 2005 and was pivotal in media discussions about unemployment solutions. After years of secrecy, he publicly came out as homosexual in 2007. He married Steen Andersen in 2012, being the first same-sex couple in a Danish church.
