He served as president of the British Numismatic Society from 1971 to 1975 and was the principal inspector of England for the Inspectorate of Ancient Monuments between 1976 and 1978. Rigold had a strong interest in medieval architecture, contributing scholarly work on the subject, and was a pioneer in the study of timber framing.
