Subedar Subramanian (18 December 1912 – 24 February 1944) was the first Indian recipient of the George Cross, awarded for his bravery during World War II. Serving in the Indian Army's Queen Victoria's Own Madras Sappers and Miners, he sacrificed his life on 24 February 1944 by jumping on a mine to save others during the Allied campaign in Italy. His act of valor earned him the George Cross, which was posthumously announced on 30 June 1944. Additionally, he received the Indian Distinguished Service Medal.
