He served as the director of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and is widely recognized for his significant contributions to the field of optoelectronics. An esteemed member of numerous prestigious academic societies, Jha is an elected fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, National Academy of Sciences, India and Indian Academy of Sciences, as well as The World Academy of Sciences and American Physical Society. In 1979, he received the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for his exceptional work in Physical Sciences.
