He became interested in the German language as a teenager and graduated from the University of Tokyo in 1957. Tanemura worked briefly at Kobunsha and later taught at Komazawa University before securing a position at Metropolitan Tokyo University in 1968, which he left in 1971 to spend time in Europe. He returned to teach at Kokugakuin University until his cancer diagnosis, passing away on August 29, 2004. His translations often focused on themes like vampires.
