Ethel 'Sunny' Lowry MBE was a pioneering British swimmer born on January 2, 1911, in Manchester. She became the first British woman to swim the English Channel in 1933 after two previous attempts. A skilled long-distance swimmer from a young age, Lowry trained rigorously and was known for her boldness in wearing a two-piece swimsuit. In recognition of her contributions to swimming, she was awarded an MBE in 2005 and inducted into the International Marathon Swimming Association's Hall of Fame in 2003. She passed away on February 21, 2008.
