He has previously served as a senior researcher at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Nagasaki. Notably, he is the older brother of manga artist Leiji Matsumoto, who has stated that the name of the protagonist from 'Space Battleship Yamato', Susumu Kodai, was inspired by his brother's name.
