Sven Åge Birkeland (March 8, 1960 – July 18, 2022) was a notable theatre director for Bergen Internasjonale Teater, BIT Teatergarasjen. He co-founded the Bergen International Theatre Festival in 1983/84. Under his leadership, BIT transitioned from a festival format to a year-round theatre in 1989/1990. Birkeland established two biennales: Oktoberdans in 1997 and Meteor in 2001, serving as curator for both. His academic background includes cultural sociology and aesthetic studies, along with theatre science. He was appointed as a deputy member of the Norwegian Arts Council for two terms.
