He earned his Ph.D. in 1943 at Uppsala University and became an associate professor of Nordic languages at Lund University in 1950. Ekbo led the Swedish Academy’s dictionary editorial team from 1957 to 1978 and was the editor of the Swedish Academy Dictionary from 1978 to 1984. He was acknowledged as a member of various academies and received the Royal Order of the Northern Star in 1958.
