Taiji Hasuda was a Japanese obstetrician and gynecologist known for establishing "Kounotori no Yurikago" (Stork's Cradle), a baby hatch that allows mothers to anonymously leave their babies at the Jikei Hospital in Kumamoto, Japan. He was the second son of Zenmei Hasuda, a Japanese literary scholar. Hasuda graduated from Kumamoto University School of Medicine in 1962 and worked at the Seibi Jikei Hospital, a Catholic hospital, for many years. In 1978, he co-founded the Jikei Hospital with his older brother, Shoichi Hasuda. In 2003, after witnessing the increase in child abuse and infanticide in Japan, Hasuda decided to introduce the "Kounotori no Yurikago" to provide a safe haven for abandoned babies. He faced criticism for his decision but believed that it was necessary to protect the lives of newborns. He also worked to promote adoption and provide counseling for pregnant women. Hasuda passed away on October 25, 2020, at the age of 84.
