Takafumi Matsui was a Japanese planetary scientist, geophysicist, and academic, born on March 7, 1946, and passed away on March 22, 2023. He graduated from the University of Tokyo's Faculty of Science and later became a professor of border science after a stint as a NASA researcher. His main fields of expertise included astrobiology and comparative planetology. Matsui served as the president of the Chiba Institute of Technology from June 2020 until his death and authored numerous scientific papers and books. An asteroid, (7301) Matsuitakafumi, was named in his honor on September 9, 2014.
