Born on June 12, 1957, he received the prestigious American Presidential Award for Research Excellence in 1989. He joined UNESCO in 1999, leading various projects focused on the use of communication technology in education. Shawki developed strategic partnerships with major companies and established global standards for teacher training in this area. In 2012, he returned to academia and became the Dean of the Mechanical Engineering Department at the American University in Cairo.
