Taro Kono (河野太郎), born in 1963, is a Japanese politician and professor who serves as the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan. He hails from Hiratsuka, Kanagawa, and was first elected as a member of the House of Representatives in 1996, representing the Liberal Democratic Party. Kono, described as a 'trailblazer' in various policies, was appointed Foreign Minister on August 3, 2017, following a cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. He is the son of Yohei Kono, the first LDP president who did not serve as Prime Minister.
