Tatjana Sernec Avšič was a Slovenian chemist and biochemist born on September 25, 1912. She graduated from the University of Ljubljana in 1938 and contributed to medical chemistry during WWII. In 1947, she worked with Nobel laureates at ETH Zurich and in 1965, she earned her doctorate. Her research focused on plant-based compounds, and she advanced gas chromatography techniques in the US. After retirement in 1977, she significantly aided in translating the first biochemistry textbook into Slovene.
