Teiji Takai (1911–1986) was a prominent Japanese painter known for his evolution from Surrealism in the 1930s to Abstract Expressionism after moving to the U.S. in 1954. His later works featured semi-figurative representations of motifs such as fish and birds, showcasing vibrant colors and dynamic compositions. Takai's art is recognized in major museum collections, including the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in Wakayama. He co-founded several artist groups, contributing significantly to Japan's avant-garde art scene before his death in 1986.
