His distinctive minimalist cartoon style favored single drawings without speech bubbles, capturing an absurdist view of life. Though initially faced with demands for more detailed work, his style later became popular in the 1960s and 1970s, earning him comparisons to Bill Tidy. Parkes also created notable pieces parodying famous artworks. He contributed cartoon sketches for Carry On film titles and illustrated stationery packaging for W H Smith in the late 1980s.
