Thabo Lucas Makunyane (1953-2020) was a notable South African politician and anti-apartheid activist. He served as Polokwane Local Municipality's first mayor from 2000 to 2010. In politics, he held positions in the National Assembly (1999-2000) and National Council of Provinces (2012-2014). Involved in the 1970s students' movement, he joined the ANC underground and contributed to founding COSAS. Makunyane was imprisoned on Robben Island from 1979-1985 and held vice-chairpersonship of the UDF for Northern Transvaal, and he faced further detention from 1986-1989.
