Than Oo is a notable Burmese educator and official in the Ministry of Education. Born in 1928 in a rural village, he faced family hardships early in life. He achieved his educational qualifications at Rangoon University and the University of Hawaiʻi. His significant contributions include leading a mass literacy movement which improved Burma's literacy rate to 78.6% and reforming language education. Later, he became Director-General of the Ministry of Education's Department of Basic Education, greatly influencing national education policy.
