Theo de Jong is a Dutch mathematician and professor specializing in computer-oriented algebra at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. He studied physics at Leiden University before switching to mathematics, earning his diploma in 1984. He worked as a research assistant on a project about singularities at Leiden and Nijmegen, and completed his PhD in 1988 with a dissertation on non-isolated hypersurface singularities. De Jong is also an author of several mathematical textbooks, published by Pearson.
