Jean-Théodore 'Theo' Schildermans was a Belgian Catholic missionary born on May 24, 1933, in Overpelt. He studied in Leuven and became a priest in 1958. Schildermans served in Kongolo, Katanga, where he was murdered on January 1, 1962, by the Congolese national army during a violent period. He was the youngest among twenty missionaries killed. A memorial service is held annually at the Chapelle-Mémorial Kongolo de Gentinnes. Efforts for the beatification of Schildermans and fellow missionaries have been initiated.
