His family was of Ukrainian descent. After leaving his family's farm post-collectivization, he sought work in Lviv. He was detained by German soldiers in 1942 and forced into labor. Szehinskyj emigrated to the United States in 1950, naturalized in 1958, and faced deportation in 2000 due to his wartime service.
