Theodore Cordy 'Ted' Freeman was an American aviation engineer, test pilot, and NASA astronaut born on February 18, 1930. He tragically died in an accident involving his T-38 jet on October 31, 1964, becoming the first fatality of NASA's astronaut corps. On that day, while flying back from a training facility, a goose struck the aircraft, causing an immediate engine failure. Freeman attempted to land but crashed near Ellington Air Force Base, Texas. He was selected for NASA's Astronaut Group 3, showcasing his significant contributions to aerospace.
