Théophile do Rego, known as El Rego, was a Beninese musician born on May 3, 1937, in Porto-Novo. He passed away on October 11, 2023. A key figure in the funk genre in Benin, he led the group El Rego and his Commandos. El Rego played an integral role in the music scene, having also performed in Senegal and contributed to the Orchestre Poly Rythmo de Cotonou. His music often features lyrics in the fon language, and he released numerous records, with some reissued in the compilation 'Legends of Benin' by Analog Africa.
