Thomas L. Hankins is an American historian of science, born on September 9, 1933, in Lawrence, Kansas. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Physics from Yale University in 1956, completed a Master of Arts in Teaching at Harvard University in 1958, and obtained his Ph.D. in History from Cornell University in 1964. He served as a professor at the University of Washington, where he contributed to the study of 18th and 19th-century theoretical physics, particularly through biographies of William Rowan Hamilton and Jean-Baptiste le Rond d’Alembert, and explored the relationship between science and the Enlightenment.
