He served as a forward air controller and fighter pilot during the Vietnam War, completing 407 combat missions in four tours. After retiring in 1994, he held positions on the boards of several military contractors and frequently appeared on Fox News until 2018. McInerney has been a vocal advocate for the Iraq War, defended the use of torture, and was known for controversial comments about John McCain.
