Thomas Merton (January 31, 1915 – December 10, 1968) was an American monk, theologian, Christian mystic, poet, social activist, and scholar of comparative religion. Appointed prior on May 26, 1949, he was known as Father Louis. Over 27 years, he authored more than 50 books focusing on spirituality, social justice, and peace in Christianity, as well as numerous articles and reviews. His autobiography, 'The Seven Storey Mountain,' was a bestseller in 1948 and included in the National Review's list of the top 100 non-fiction books.
