He served as the president of the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut, a federal research institute for animal health, from July 1, 1996, to June 30, 2023. The institute, formerly known as the Federal Research Institute for Viral Diseases of Animals, is based on the island of Riems near Greifswald.
