He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1956 and served in various capacities, including commander of the 3rd Armored Division and staff officer roles. Griffin's military career included service in Vietnam and several assignments in different military commands. He was also educated at the George Washington University and several military institutions. He passed away on April 6, 2020, and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
