He worked as a copywriter before publishing several critically acclaimed story collections, including 'You Must Break Out Sometimes' and 'A Young Man in a Hurry.' Beachcroft also wrote a novel, 'The Man Who Started Clean,' and various essays. He held a position as Chief Overseas Publicity Officer for the BBC and edited the 'Writers and Their Work' series for the British Council. Despite initial praise, his later works were seen as less innovative.
