Thomas Sutherland (1931-2016) was an influential academic who served as the Dean of Agriculture at the American University of Beirut. He gained international attention after being kidnapped by Islamic Jihad on June 9, 1985, near his home in Beirut. Sutherland was held captive for an extended period, lasting 2,353 days, and was finally released on November 18, 1991, at the same time as fellow hostage Terry Waite. His experience highlights the dangers faced by expatriates in regions of conflict during that time.
