Thor Kristen Tjøntveit (1936-2017) was a notable Norwegian-American aviator. He became the first person to fly over both the North and South Poles in a single trip. After moving to the US and becoming a citizen, he operated a general aviation aircraft retail business and founded the charter airline Trans Polar. Legal issues followed him throughout his life, including bankruptcy and fraud convictions. Tjøntveit was involved in the largest VAT fraud in Norwegian history, prompting him to flee and later return, serving prison time until 2012. He passed away on March 3, 2017.
