Thoraya Obaid is an international advocate for women's issues and served as the Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) from January 1, 2001, until the end of 2010. She is noted for being the first Saudi woman to lead a UN agency. Obaid also worked as the Director of the Arab States and Europe Division at UNFPA and held various positions at the United Nations and ESCWA, focusing on women's empowerment and social development. In 1975, she founded the first women's development program in the Arab world.
